Today we talked about small group instruction otherwise known as guided reading. We talked about the why and how to introduce a book. This was a review for me particular around background knowledge and prior knowledge. The model below on an approach you can take was good and a nice reminder of what needs to be included.
I will say that the observation part I will try and work a bit harder on doing more of. One of the forms that can be used for this seems like I could implement it easily enough. I just need to try and remember to do this along with everything else going on.
I would like to use the rubric with the children on fluency as this seems straight forward and would be a good reflection for them. The children filming themselves is very challenging in the hub and I will try the other app that someone suggested that might be helpful. As I can see the children benefiting from this activity.

ReplyDeleteWelcome back to the Reading Practice Intensive and thank you for your reflections on Day 4: Small Group Reading Instruction. It’s great to read that the beginning elements in the small group approach were mainly a review for you but were a ‘good reminder’.
Regards recording some notes while observing students reading, and perhaps even trying out one of the recording sheets we suggested, do just give this a go when you have space, as you say. I agree with your point that the fluency rubric can be really beneficial for learners to self-rate, once they are set up for success, or eventually, even rating one another. Fluency, as we discussed, has considerable influence on comprehension. I understand how this can be challenging with the noise in a hub space and agree that trying out Adobe Podcast would be a worthwhile solution. Do ask your Manaiakalani Facilitators on the ground to help with this. I know Fi and Merryn would be keen to come in and assist get you set up.
Look forward to seeing you for Day 5 and as we talked about at the end of the day, just make the tweaks you can for now and come back to anything you would like to implement - but current planning doesn’t afford space for- at a future date.
All the best for a super positive start to Term 2!

HI Nicola, the tool we suggested was the adobe podcast tool. Again Fi or Meryn will be able to help you get this going in your class. Kiri
