Reading Programme Intensive

 Day One

The above is what we are aiming to achieve with the children. There is a reciprocal relationship between reading and oral language.  To get extended discussions you need to have the right environment. This needs to have four aspects

1. Classroom Culture

2. A Framework of Support

3. Opportunities

4. Quality Reasoning

Setting the ground rules does allow this to happen in a safe and supportive environment. I like the video of the guy going through this with his children as this made it nice and clear what we are trying to achieve. He did stop the group which was beneficial as this was a perfect teaching time. I plan to do some work on this particular task at the start of the year while I set up my group norms. Although I do like the reflection I may make some small changes.

I have done the survey with the children before, although have never looked at with the children. So that will be an interesting task to do.

I will be using the 'Good Fit' activity or one like it as this is something I have talked about for years with the children ( ever since I came across Daily Five reading ) but have never done it digitally. I am thinking about the Modelling Book online that I came across in the planning. Not sure am quite ready for that as tend to do it more in an actual book but will see. So a few things to think about and try.

Thank you for sharing your reflections from RPI Day 1: Reading Is Core to learning, and for your contributions to the breakout group conversations. I hope you find the small group activities, and collaborations, to be increasingly beneficial going forward.

It’s great to hear that you had some key takeaways across the sessions including: the reciprocal relationship between reading and oral language.); setting ground rules for talk in a safe and supportive environment.; and using the 'Good Fit' book activity.

It’s great to hear that you already have some experience of having used the Reader Profile Survey, so we are really looking forward to hearing about your class results at the start of 2025 and how things go discussing these results with students.

All the best with your ‘homework’ over the coming weeks and opportunities for some great discussions with Essie. Please give her and Anna my warmest regards!

  2. Kia ora Nicola,

It sounds like you have identified key elements for fostering extended discussions—classroom culture, support, opportunities and quality reasoning—all of which create a strong foundation for meaningful student engagement. Your plan to establish group norms early in the year is a great approach. I could see from my observation of your Ground Rules for Talk lesson that your students had a good understanding of these norms already - long may the group norms continue!

It is great to see you reflecting on digital tools like the ‘Good Fit’ activity and the Modelling Book. Looking forward to hearing how these strategies evolve in your classroom!
